Eligibility guide

What Qualifies for Tax Free Weekend 2026?

A tax-free weekend does not make every purchase tax-free. Most states limit the exemption by item category, per-item price, timing, and sometimes local participation.

Qualification flow

1

State window

Is your purchase during the correct 2026 state holiday dates?

2

Item category

Does the item match a listed exempt category, not just a similar category?

3

Price cap

Is the line-item price below the state and category limit?

4

Final check

Do online, local tax, or retailer rules change the receipt?

Clothing and footwear are common, but not universal.

Back-to-school sales tax holidays often include everyday clothing and shoes. The details still vary. Some states exclude accessories, protective equipment, sports gear, or rentals. A backpack may be treated differently from a handbag even if both are carried to school.

  • Check whether the rule says clothing, footwear, school uniforms, or apparel.
  • Look for exclusions such as jewelry, watches, handbags, sports equipment, and protective gear.
  • Use the per-item price limit, not the total receipt value, when the state uses a per-item cap.

School supplies usually have their own definitions.

Pens, notebooks, binders, folders, art supplies, and calculators are common categories. Computers, tablets, printers, and software often use a separate rule or a higher price limit. Do not assume a laptop qualifies because notebooks qualify.

  • Separate classroom supplies from computers and electronics.
  • Check whether teacher supplies and student supplies are treated differently.
  • Watch for category lists that include examples but still exclude similar-looking items.

Emergency and energy holidays use different logic.

Some states have tax-free periods for emergency preparation supplies or energy-efficient products. These are not the same as back-to-school weekends. A generator, battery, weather radio, or water-efficient product can have a different date window and price rule from school supplies.

Retailer signs are useful, but official sources are final.

Stores may simplify the rule for marketing. If a cart includes expensive electronics, online purchases, local taxes, or mixed categories, the safest check is the state revenue department, comptroller, or tax agency page.
